Dana Tostenson Physiotherapist treating a patient with TMJ and Jaw Pain

What is the TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex joint that connects your jaw to your skull. TMJ pain can result from various factors, including stress, misalignment of the jaw or disc, muscle tension, or injury. Our specialized team is here to help you find relief and improve your quality of life.

TMJ conditions We Treat

  • Muscular Pain and Tension - Pain near the TMJ is due to dysfunction or irritation of the surrounding musculature

  • Joint Line Tenderness - The TMJ joint itself is the cause of pain, due to overuse, a traumatic injury

  • Painful with Chewing - The disc within the TMJ is irritated and sensitive to compression during chewing, biting, clenching

  • Pain with Opening - The disc within the TMJ is restricting the jaw from opening (sometimes known as locking) or causing a painful pop

  • Jaw Clicking - A pop can occur when the disc is located too far forward within the joint or if the jaw muscles are not coordinating well

Services

Physiotherapy

Our physiotherapists use a combination of manual therapy, dry needling/IMS, exercises, and education to address TMJ pain. They work to improve joint mobility, reduce muscle tension, and enhance overall jaw function.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic adjustments and manipulations can help alleviate TMJ pain by addressing misalignments and promoting proper joint function both within the TMJ itself and issues stemming from the neck (research shows that 70% of TMJ patients are also experiencing neck pain).

Registered Massage Therapy (RMT)

Our skilled RMTs use massage techniques to relieve muscle tension, improve circulation, and enhance relaxation, contributing to TMJ pain relief.
