What causes Neck Pain?

Neck pain can arise from various factors, including sudden injuries, poor posture, and degenerative conditions. Sudden trauma, such as whiplash from a car accident or a fall, can strain the muscles and ligaments in the neck. Prolonged poor posture, such as hunching over a computer or sleeping in an awkward position, can lead to muscle imbalances and tension in the neck. Another common source of neck pain arises from irritation of the disc and/or neighbouring nerves in the area leading what feels like a “pinched nerve” or a “bulged disc”. Additionally, degenerative conditions like arthritis can cause chronic neck pain over time.

Symptoms of Neck Pain

If you are experiencing discomfort or stiffness in your neck, keep an eye out for these symptoms:

  • Pain or stiffness in the neck, which may radiate to the shoulders, upper back or down the arm.

  • Difficulty turning your head from side to side or tilting it up and down.

  • Headaches, especially originating from the base of the skull or behind the eyes.

  • Numbness or tingling sensations that travel down the arm.

  • Muscle spasms or tightness in the neck and shoulder area.

How Physio, Chiro and Massage Therapy Help address neck pain at Pursuit Physiotherapy

If you have been experiencing neck pain, our physiotherapists, chiropractors and massage therapists are here to help you with your recovery through a safe and holistic approach. Our therapists across these modalities can work together to address all aspects of your concern, by providing a thorough assessment and treatment from deep tissue work to relaxation and exercise prescription.

Physiotherapy can help you assess your injury and current function, and provide you with manual therapy and neck-specific exercises to help improve your mobility, strength, and function. Physiotherapy can also include IMS dry needling and manipulation to lower the sensitivity of the muscles and the nervous system, provide pain relief and regulate muscle tone in the area.

Massage Therapy provides a therapeutic approach to addressing neck pain through the utilization of various massage techniques, breathing techniques, joint mobilization and stretching exercises.

Chiropractic care will specifically address the joints and musculoskeletal function in the neck and surrounding areas. Chiropractic care can provide a comprehensive treatment plan utilizing a blend of active release techniques, massage, joint mobilizations and manipulation, as well as an effective home exercise program leading to a long term solution. Manual therapy in chiropractic care may be more intense and targeted in comparison to regular massage therapy.
