What causes Knee Pain?

Knee pain can arise from a variety of factors, including acute injuries, overuse, biomechanical issues, and degenerative conditions. Acute injuries, such as ligament sprains, meniscus tears, or patellar dislocations, can occur from sudden trauma or sports-related incidents. Chronic overuse or repetitive movements, such as running or jumping, can lead to strains or inflammation in the knee joint. Additionally, biomechanical issues like muscle imbalances or poor alignment can put added stress on the knee joint over time. Degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis or cartilage deterioration can also contribute to chronic knee pain.

Symptoms of Knee Pain

Experiencing discomfort or limitations in your knees? Here are some common symptoms to watch out for:

  • Pain or tenderness around the knee joint, especially during weight-bearing activities like walking, running, or climbing stairs.

  • Swelling or inflammation around the knee, which may be accompanied by warmth or redness.

  • Stiffness or reduced range of motion in the knee joint, making it difficult to fully bend or straighten the leg.

  • Instability or a feeling of "giving way" in the knee, particularly during physical activity or when changing directions.

  • New clicking, popping, or grinding sensations in the knee joint.

How Physio, Chiro and MAssage Therapy Help at Pursuit Physiotherapy

If you have been experiencing knee pain, our physiotherapists, chiropractors and massage therapists are here to help you with your recovery through a safe and holistic approach. Our therapists across these modalities can work together to address all aspects of your concern, by providing a thorough assessment and treatment from deep tissue work to relaxation and exercise prescription.

Physiotherapy can help you assess your injury and current function, and provide you with manual therapy and knee-specific exercises to help improve your mobility, strength, and function. Physiotherapy can also include IMS dry needling to lower the sensitivity of the muscles and the nervous system, stimulate blood flow to the area and provide pain relief.

Massage Therapy provides a therapeutic approach to addressing knee pain through the utilization of various massage techniques, breathing, relaxation, joint mobilization and stretching.

Chiropractic care will specifically address the joints and musculoskeletal function in the knee and surrounding areas. Chiropractic care can provide a comprehensive treatment plan utilizing a blend of active release techniques, massage, joint mobilizations and manipulation, as well as an effective home exercise program leading to a long-term solution. Manual therapy in chiropractic care may be more intense and targeted in comparison to massage therapy.
