What causes Back Pain?

Common causes of back pain can include a traumatic injury, a change in activity level, or an unexpected load on the back. Back pain may be acute due to a sudden trauma or a repetitive movement strain. Chronic back painoften starts with an acute incidencent but persists due to complex number of factors. A car accident, sports injury, work related injury or consistent poor posture are common causes of back pain. For example, lifting a heavy box with poor posture or an awkward sudden movement. Stress, poor sleep, anxiety and other lifestyle factors may contribute to back pain.

Symptoms of Back Pain

Back pain can be localized or diffuse across one or both sides of the back as well as radiating into the glutes or even down the leg. Some things you may be experiencing include:

  • increased pain and discomfort with bending or twisting

  • you feel the need to stretch or crack your back to relieve discomfort

  • worsening pain when standing, sitting or lying down

  • pain radiating to other areas of the body

  • weakness or numbness into the leg
