How Peace and Love Can Accelerate Your Healing Process

You have just had a sprain, a fall, or felt something go. Now what?

First of all, don’t panic, you’re going to get through this just fine! Provided you can put weight through the affected limb, there isn’t significant bruising or bleeding, and you can contract the affected muscle, you likely haven’t done anything too serious to warrant a trip to the hospital. That said, if you are unsure or feel it could be something serious, please call 811 or go to your local walk-in or emergency room.

Then, remember to give your body PEACE and LOVE.

In those first few days, we focus on PEACE.

During this time, we are thinking of how we can best support our body’s innate ability to heal. This means we are trying to promote the natural inflammatory cascades that our body needs to begin the healing process.

“Isn’t inflammation bad?”

It’s at this point, a number of questions come up from patients. People hear so often that we need to avoid inflammation and as such we ice and take anti-inflammatories. The truth is that short bouts of inflammation (such as what occurs right after an injury) is essential. It is through inflammation that nutrients and a supporting cast of cells are delivered to the injury site to begin repairing the injury. If we over-ice or take anti-inflammatories we disrupt and potentially prolong the healing process.

After the first few days, we can start giving our body some LOVE.

As the healing process continues along you can increase your activity level and build your body back to full function. To do this, we encourage you to move as much as is tolerated. We aren’t just talking about the injured area either, don’t forget that you have the rest of your body to keep healthy. Too often, we see that when patients are injured, they become very sedentary. While the injury may affect your ability to perform your favorite types of activities, there are many things you can do to keep the rest of your body healthy. Lastly, through all of this, don’t forget to keep positive! Your body is amazing and is going to recover from this injury. Tissues heal, the nervous system adapts, and you will get through this.
