What Is De Quervain’s, Exactly?

Two tendons control much of your thumb’s movement away from your hand: the ones that lift and extend your thumb. On their way from your forearm to your thumb, they pass through a narrow tunnel on the thumb side of your wrist. De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is what happens when that tunnel and the tendons inside it become irritated and thickened, so the smooth gliding turns into painful friction.


It’s often described as an
“overuse” or repetitive-strain condition, but the fuller picture is one of load outpacing capacity — the demand on those tendons rising faster than the tissue can adapt. That’s why it so often appears after a new or increased pattern of hand use: a new baby, a new job, a home-renovation push, or a summer of gardening.
